FIRST SECRETARY (1959 - 1964)

FIRST SECRETARY (1959 - 1964). SHARAF RASHIDOV'S FOREIGN POLICY ACTIVITIES (1962-1964)

1962. Sharaf Rashidov led a Soviet delegation which visited the Cuban Republic with a very difficult mission to persuade, on behalf of the Soviet government, the country's leader Fidel Castro to deploy nuclear missiles in Cuba to protect against possible American aggression.
The mission was successful, and the Cuban authorities consented to supply and deployment of nuclear missiles. The world is well aware of the "Cuban crisis" that broke out afterwards. This visit of the delegation marked the beginning of sincere, friendly relations between the two leaders, Castro and Rashidov.
1963. Rashidov, at the head of the party and government delegation, visited Algeria to hold talks on the development of economic cooperation.
1964. Sharaf Rashidov led the party and government delegation that visited Algeria to participate in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the revolution in the country. Delegations from 80 other countries arrived to celebrate this event.
IN 1964, SHARAF RASHIDOV'S FIVE-YEAR TERM AS FIRST SECRETARY OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF UZBEKISTAN ENDED. BUT HIS STORY AS THE HEAD OF THE REPUBLIC WAS ONLY BEGINNING.
