FIRST SECRETARY (1959 - 1964)

FIRST SECRETARY (1959 - 1964). CREATIVITY OF SHARAF RASHIDOV

DESPITE BEING BUSY AS THE FIRST SECRETARY OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE CPSU OF UZBEKISTAN, SHARAF RASHIDOV, AS BEFORE, FOUND TIME FOR LITERARY CREATIVITY – HE CONTINUED TO WRITE BOOKS AT NIGHT. IN THOSE VERY DAYS, WHEN THE OPERATION ANADYR WAS BEING IMPLEMENTED, HE HAD ON HIS DESK AN ALMOST FINISHED MANUSCRIPT OF THE NOVEL THE MIGHTY WAVE DEDICATED TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FARKHAD DAM.
As in Rashidov's two previous books – The Victors and Stronger Than the Storm –, the story was centred on the fate of two young people in love with each other. The book also covered the subject of a workplace conflict, popular in Soviet literature of those years, which arose between an innovator, the first secretary of a district party committee, and a conservative representing a district council.

"Speaking about the main characters of my novels, critics noted their behaviour was similar to that of Pavel Korchagin. I don't think I should deny this. Korchagin can be felt in the characters of more than one generation of Soviet people. Its origins are in our revolution, in the glorious traditions of the struggle of the working class. It is bred by the Communist Party, which has always paid and is paying great attention to youth. Nowadays, this behaviour can be observed in the exploits of cosmonauts, in the heroic work of the builders of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, and in the glorious deeds of cotton growers and developers of virgin lands. It expresses in a concentrated, I would say materialised form loyalty to the great cause of communism, high morality, and the unparalleled courage of the conscious builders of a new society. It is typical for the personality of a Soviet man, our contemporary," Sharaf Rashidov wrote.
